But sometimes it is not so easy to find good pairs even with better pairing heuristics. On the left we try to register the dark curve to the light one. The heuristic here is to pair a point with the closest point that has a compatible normal vector. Notice that many points find a mate above them, while for some the mate is to the left, below, or even to the right. There is no consistency in the pairings.

In the picture on the right the rule is to pair a point with the closest point that has a compatible color. As many points have a mate to the right of them as to the left.

In the bottom picture many points do not even have a corresponding point in the other view and such points should not be paired at all.

Finding a good consistent pairing for points for which a mate exists is very difficult to do using only local pairing rules.
