Why not static texturing, that is, just assigning each surface point a unique color that remains the same no matter where you look from?
Two reasons. First, our data is view-dependent. Here's a scan of a flower basket. On the left the data is viewed from where it was scanned, and the result is a nice picture. On the right the same data is seen from a different direction, and now we can see that on tilted surfaces the data is actually not so good. Both the surface geometry and color are sampled too sparsely and exhibit serious aliasing artifacts.
