Within registration, there are two important subproblems.

The first is the correspondence problem: given a point in one view, which point in the other view corresponds to the same surface point?

The second problem is the alignment: given point correspondences, which rigid motion aligns the data sets?

Of these two problems, the correspondence problem is the hard one. For alignment there exist closed form solutions for calculating a least-squares solution.
