The Story Behind "Ankles"

Many people have wondered why Reid Gershbein has been nicknamed "Ankles." It all begins at Siggraph 95. Siggraph, is of course the roving mecca for the hipest of us computer science hipsters. The yearly hajj allows lucky graduate computer science students to rub shoulders with powerful Hollywood moguls as well as many of the subjects of Wired Magazines most interesting articles. Siggraph 95 was held in beautiful downtown LA and Reid, Matt "Shortstop" Pharr and Craig "Hamster" Kolb shared a hotel room at the Convention Center Holiday Inn.

Shorty, Homan "Muskrat" Igehy and Venkat Krishnamurthy were returning to Shorty's hotel room after dinner one evening. As Shorty got to the door he stuck his key in the lock and turned the handle. The door slowly opened and he started walking in when Shorty heard Reid's shrill yell, "Wait! Don't come in! Hold on a sec!" Shorty, with his obliging personality and his eagle eyes immediately shut the door, but not before noting two very important facts.

Reid was sitting on the bed with his pants around his ankles.

Reid was on the telephone.

After giving Reid a few minutes to compose himself, Shorty et. al. went into the room with some fear in their hearts. Reid tried to play it off with the logical claim that he was in the bathroom when the phone rang. We have yet to understand why he felt like he had to answer it.
