Cycling Personal Records

This page is mainly for my own use. The records are nothing special, but I figured I would write them down so that I don't forget. This just seemed to be a convenient place to keep them, where I could find them without digging through my shelves... :-)

Speeds in parentheses list both my bike computer velocity, and my overall (distance/time) velocity. The first number only counts the time that the wheel is rotating, and does not include stoplights, stopsigns, and food breaks. The stopwatch, however, runs continuously, so the second number is overall average speed.

Most of these records were set with my Fuji Mountain bike. However, I've started attacking my PR's with my new Performance R205 road bike. Each record has a [Mtn] or [Road] tag to signify which bike was used for the record.

50 miles: 2:42:40 (18.7 / 18.4 mph) [Mtn]

This was the first half of a 100-mile ride. This section was a 1-way trip from Palo Alto to Gilroy, June 30, 1996.

100 miles: 5:38:08 (18.6 / 17.7 mph) [Mtn]

This was a pretty flat century, from Palo Alto to Gilroy to Los Altos, June 30, 1996. The total climb was 1380'.

200 miles: 17:44:00 (15 / 11.3 mph) [Road]

This ride was part of my trip from Palo Alto to San Luis Obispo, March 21, 1997. I hit the 200-mile-mark south of Atascadero. I had no tailwind on the trip, except for the draft from passing trucks on 101. At the 200-mile mark, I had climbed over 5000 feet, and was roughly 900 feet above my starting point. [I don't know exactly, because my altimeter died].

My old record [Mtn] was 18:52, 13.6mph, 5400', on a nearly closed loop from Palo Alto - Hollister - Monterey - Los Gatos, July 13, 1996.

Stanford->Home: 54:05 (18.1 / 18.2 mph) [Road]
Home->Stanford: 49:35 (20.1 / 19.8 mph) [Road]

It's a 16.4 mile ride (each way) from the Rains Houses (Stanford) to my home in Belmont. My route follows Foothill, Sand Hill, Whiskey Hill, Canada, and Ralston. It's 1070 feet of climbing going home, and 820 feet of climbing coming back. There are nine stoplights and six stopsigns along the way. I set these records on May 3, 1997 and September 29, 1996 (The first weekend that I had my road bike) respectively. My old [Mtn] records were 58:40 and 53:50).

Canada Road: 19:58 (22.8 / 22.8 mph) [Road]

This is a common local time-trial course. From Edgewood Road to (almost) Highway 92 and back, it's 7.6 miles (and about 300 feet of climbing). I set this record on January 12, 2000. My old road bike record was 20:45, set on Jan. 17, 1997.

Mega-Monster Pinnacles Enduro: 4:51:50 (19.0 / 18.7 mph) [Road]

I did this annual Low-Key event on Feb. 8, 1997. It starts in Gilroy and covers 90.8 miles en route to Pinnacles Nat'l Monument and back. Since the ride is an enduro, drafting is only allowed for the first 3.3 miles. I solo'ed the rest of the way. The total climb for the ride is about 2450 feet.
