As opposed to most traditional methods for modeling smooth curved surfaces, we do not need to deal with patches. Even complicated objects with lots of geometric detail can be described using a single mesh. Because the connectivity of the control mesh is not fixed, as is for example the case with NURBS, we can describe the top of the head with a few large triangles and have many small triangles for the eyes and the ears.
