This is a necklace that my grandmother gave to me when I was 12 years old. It's something that I cherish very much, and always makes me think of her when I see it.
I wanted the image to be soft, and have an antique feel, so I shot it with a lace placed in front of the lens. I like the effect that this has on the photo, with the darker and lighter parts showing through the lace. The lace is also important because my grandmother crochets lace things for me.
I added the candle for the lighting because I thought it would make a nice reflection in the gold of the necklace, as well as in the piece of paper that I used for the background. To prop the necklace up I used a jewelry tree, which I wasn't sure if I would keep in the image but I think the hardness adds a nice balance to the darkness of the lace on the left side of the image.
I really liked the way this turned out. I used a large aperture for a small depth of field, and set the shutter speed to get the lighting right. I cropped the image in photoshop but otherwise did not do much to process it.
